2/26/2006 Dubya loses BuckleyWilliam F Buckley Jr, the former CIA agent (who worked for later Watergate co-conspirator Howard Hunt) and the long-time editor of the National Review, one of the "true believer" Republicans, has now turned on his hero and called on GWB to admit defeat on the war in Iraq.
This is huge. Bill Buckley, who once hosted the popular PBS program Firing Line, which I thought was a much more insightful conservative program than the still airing and very bombastic McLaughlin Group hosted by Father John McLaughlin (sorry, John, but once a Jesuit always a Jesuit) is a hero on the right wing and still an influence on the starboard leaning members of the Hollywood establishment, including Tom Selleck. He also commands respect on the left as much as Ann Coulter garners contempt; for unlike Coulter he uses real humour and a (mostly) non-confrontational approach to get his point across. (I did said mostly, on rare occasions he has gone overboard, such as the time he called Gore Vidal a "queer" and "crypto-Nazi.")
Mr Buckley has changed his mind on a number of issues, including the so-called War on Drugs (he now favours decriminalization). He has also said that Dubya pretends to be a conservative but really isn't; suggesting that by invading a country without at least some experience with real democracy, GWB didn't know what he was getting into.
For Buckley to now go all the way and say, "Let's just give up" is signficant. It may not mean much to someone like Dubya who has rarely admitted that he's wrong. To the progressive movement, getting an unlikely ally like the columnist is a huge moral victory. It certainly should give the Democrats some badly needed ammunition in the run-up to the mid-terms in November. Comments (2)
